When two gamers meet, the first thing you’ll hear people ask after the words ‘Hello’ or ‘Hey’ tends to be: “So.. What games do you like?”. And since we’re already slowly getting to know each other, I think it’s time to answer that question. Well.. at least try to. Read more

Grading Gems #1: Yoshi’s Woolly World

Yoshi's Woolly World
Yoshi’s Woolly World

Do you know that feeling of just hanging on the couch on a Saturday evening, holding a controller in one hand and your head in the other? Being completely zoned out, sucked into the world of the game you’re playing? If you do, then have I got a treat for you! (If you don’t, join me on the couch and I’ll teach you. Laziness is my specialty.)

Yoshi’s Woolly World for the Nintendo Wii U is a game developed by Good-Feel and published by, of course, Nintendo. And wow, could the developer’s name be any more fitting? If there is one game that’ll have you completely engulfed in an imaginary world that feels all cuddly and warm, it’s this game.

Wonderful Woolly World
That particular atmosphere is also the very first thing you’ll experience firsthand when you launch the game. Pretty much everything in this side-scrolling platforming game oozes color and you’ll be bombarded with funky jams, soothing themes and upbeat tunes.

The entire game is made out of wool. The characters are made of wool, the ground and the environment are made out of wool and I personally believe that if you’ll dig deep enough, you’ll find that even the code behind the game is scratched onto the disk with knitting needles.

The presentation of the game, the music and just the way the game plays in its entirety makes it a perfect example of one that will make you zone out and feel happy and relaxed.

Just listen to the soundtrack of the game (which is playing in the background as I’m writing this review). As a bass-player, it’s especially enjoyable. Click the link. Do it.

Easy Going?
That doesn’t mean however, that the game is easy. Sure, you’re given the option to switch to ‘Mellow Mode’ (an easier mode, obviously) at any point in the game but come on, a game with graphics like these can’t be that hard right? Well, guess again.

Similar to games like Yoshi’s Story and Yoshi’s Island , you’ll be collecting a multitude of items, ranging from ‘Smiley Flowers’ (which are basically.. Smiling flowers, I can’t make much more of that. Sorry.) to Stamps. Finding all the collectibles will prove to be quite the challenge especially in combination with the increasing difficulty. And then there’s collecting the yarn.

Yarn for life
Yarn. Oh the yarn. It’s pretty much like coffee to someone working in a cubicle. You just need to have it. I have spent countless hours in this game trying to collect all the pieces of yarn. You see, in every level there are 5 pieces of yarn to be found. If you manage to complete the level with all those 5 pieces, you’ll receive a new skin for your Yoshi. And with 50+ levels in the game, there are a lot of skins. And I wanted all of them. You’ll want all of them. (Shout out to the Fluffin’ Puffin’ Yoshi skin. You can unlock that somewhere in world 3. How is that not cute?!)

Verdict
If you’re worn out after a hard day at work, this game is the perfect way to unwind. Sure, the game has a few flaws and quirks such as Yoshi’s transformations being a little gimmicky and showing up too little, but apart from that it’s just such a solid game. The gameplay is fluid, the atmosphere is amazing and it’ll keep you coming back for more.

I can assure you that if you are to pick up this game, you’ll understand what I mean. It’s hard to explain but trust me, after playing this game you’ll be asking your grandma to knit you stuff non-stop. –Or you could buy the Amiibos, which are already knitted for you.–

The verdict? Like yarn. Soft and cuddly.
